Periyar National Park - Thekkady

PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK

Tucked in between the Cardamom and Pandalam hills, Periyar National Park s a tiger reserve and an elephant reserve in Idukki. The Periyar - Kerala’s longest river flows right through the valley providing the inhabiting animals with the much needed perennial water.

The Periyar National Park provides a home to wild animals, trees, flowering plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, freshwater fish and insists. The flora and fauna of the area is so unique. Various ecosystems like evergreen and moist deciduous forests, grasslands and lake and river co-exist here.

PERIYAR LAKE

Take a boat trip across the lake Periyar and you will cherish in your memory forever. The lake flows through the park and is the watering hole for wild animals like heard of elephant and dears. Gaur, Bison, Sambar is seen on the grassland beside him Lake. During the summer months of March and April, the sightings would be more frequent.

The lake eco-system is home to more than 30 species of freshwater fish. Otters are very common here. Darters, kingfisher, Egrets are the commonly seen birds.

JEEP SAFARI

Get a closer look at the real wildlife and get to the know the rules of the jungle. All you have to do is to take a Jeep Safari through the Sanctuary Thekkady. You can see the places otherwise would not have been accessible. Giant Squirrels, birds and troops of langurs are commonly seen. If you can fortunate you can ever see tiger hunting. The safari ends at the biological garden in a hamlet named Gavi, Pathanamthitta home too many endangered species like the Nilgiri Thar and lion-tailed macaque.

BAMBOO RAFTING

Imagine a trekking through the dense forest rich in flora and fauna right from the dawn. You can be up-close with Nilgiri Langur, Giant Squirrel, herds of elephant, Gaurs etc. That’s not all. Then towards the dusk, you can have a 3-hour long rafting experience through the Periyar. What’s more? You will be darting the Periyar not on a natural bamboo boat which makes it all the more adventures.
